Inspiration never happens in a 24/7 buzzing environment with permanent noise and distractions. Our mind needs to stop so that clear intuition can come through. The more we slow down, the faster we can move. This is true efficiency and effectiveness – a beautiful paradox. Olot is a hidden gem, just a little bit too far away from everything. That way, it has preserved its artisan culture and the love of analog life, art and nature. The Catalan culture has co-creativity and doing things together written into its culture. In Olot alone there are over 200 registered associations. Many cultural activities and festivals are happening all year round, mixing tradition with modernity. Here, you live with a feeling of being outside of time. It is like a living museum. The rhythm is much slower than in the big cities of the world. The history of Olot is full of great pioneers, especially in art, architecture and engineering. One of the oldest art-schools of Catalunya was founded here by the masters of well known artists, such as Dalí, Picasso and Miró. The Catalan modernism was basically born here, before it landed in Barcelona, and was exported to the USA. The essence of this city is strong, although it has been compromised by industrialization. Not your average meet-cute, this was a boy-meets-girl scenario straight out of a masked ball fantasy at the legendary Liceu Opera House. But this wasn’t just any boy – he was the mastermind and DJ behind this breathtaking spectacle, a man dedicated to sharing beauty with the world. And the girl? Well, she was his guest, handpicked because of her captivating blog – a portal into the spiritual and metaphysical realms of human connection, exploring the energetic dance between us, all woven with threads of quantum mechanics (for those in the know: think Twin Flame dynamics, for everyone else, no worries, it’s not a quiz!). He was captivated by her exploration of these unseen forces, while she was drawn to his audacious vision – a Second Renaissance for humanity, a revolution fueled by the transformative power of beauty. It was the beginning of the worldwide economic and financial crisis. GETRAG came close to bankruptcy, prevented only by state subventions and extended bank credit lines. The PR strategy up until that point was “no comment”, which left wide open space for speculation and gave other stakeholders, the unions, the government, the customers, control over the narrative. The press tonality about GETRAG in 2008 was deeply negative, causing panic among employees and their families. I approached press representatives with respect, understood their needs as journalists, and focused on building genuine trust. I organised regular off-the-record meetings with members of the management board, informal press breakfasts, and inspiring test drive events, creating a comfortable, warm atmosphere to connect, exchange, and share the latest developments, background information, and numbers. Within a single year, the international press tonality shifted from negative to consistently positive. From that moment on, GETRAG maintained a welcoming open-door policy for journalists, locally, nationally, and internationally. It was highly valued by all of them. My condition from the beginning: to unite the previously separated functions of external communications, internal communications, and market communications under one umbrella, in a staff function reporting directly to the CEO. My vision was an integrated approach to corporate communications that would break down silo structures and make the entire flow more efficient. I hired 12 of the 16 team members externally, to bring in fresh expertise and an unbiased perspective on the company and its ways of working. My focus was on team building first, eliminating competitive thinking within the team. I rejected performance reviews for that reason, and my annual bonus payment was used for team activities to celebrate success together. This way, money as a competitive and extrinsic motivational factor was removed. Instead, I focused on the essence of each team member, finding their drivers for intrinsic motivation through team workshops. The team members not only understood themselves and their unique strengths better, but also developed a real understanding of the talents each person brought in for successful collaboration. Instead of an elbow culture, a culture of mutual support and co-creation unfolded. The result was a fun, honest team culture with outstanding results in all communication fields. It did not stop there. The collaboration extended to all 23 subsidiaries worldwide, including the Joint Venture with Ford in Cologne. I created interfaces with dedicated communication responsibles at each location and in each corporate function for regular exchange, collecting topics for all communication channels, locally and globally, in a monthly meeting called “Agenda Setting. ” Here, all topics were collected and distributed across internal and external channels. One of the first interdisciplinary and international projects within this network, and the basis for a new global branding approach, was to go back in history to the essence of GETRAG and why it all began. The result was an interactive multi-channel storytelling, online and offline, which later won the German Design Award 2016. Up until that point, the company had been trying to give as little information as possible to its employees. That changed radically with the new communication strategy. One of my first actions was to push through the abolition of a company regulation forbidding employees the use of social media. Instead, employees were encouraged to speak about their experiences at work and share their opinion about the company and its products. Internal communication activities were globally aligned to ensure everyone received the same information, through all-hands meetings, management newsletters, and regular updates. All of this went hand in hand with a global bottom-up creation and roll-out of corporate values as the basis for collaboration. For me it was clear: the best and most authentic ambassadors for the brand were not influencers, fans, or journalists. They were the employees themselves. To truly reach all of them, including the many without computer access in production locations, we created the interactive employee magazine “SHIFT”, distributed four times per year in seven languages. With this new approach of putting employees at the centre of communications, “GETRAG City, the Home of Transmissions” was born. For four years, I volunteered as Innovation and Communications Chairman at FEEC, the Catalan Mountain Federation for Alpinism and Climbing. A federation with over a hundred years of history, 40,000 active members, and more than a million weekly mountaineers in Catalonia. There, I led a team to research the origins of what we now know as trail-running: the forgotten mountain rallies that originated in the 1950s. Over two years, together with mountain pioneers and innovators from around the world, we investigated what got lost along the way and brought a new proposal to reconnect with the mountains and to play together beyond competition. With deep respect for the past, and with a core group of veteran organisers and mountain club leaders, we celebrated a pilot event in the Pyrenees.
